RGB Networks Enables Telecom Carriers to Deliver Advanced Video Services with New Modular Video Processor

MVP Dramatically Expands RGB’s Presence in Telco IPTV Market

RGB Networks (www.rgbnetworks.com), the leader in network video processing, today expanded its presence in the telecommunications industry with the introduction of its new Modular Video Processor (MVP), the company’s first product built specifically to meet the advanced video delivery needs of telco carriers. The MVP is a complete IPTV solution that will enable telcos to deliver high quality, IP-based video services to their subscribers. A true carrier-class solution, the MVP combines support for MPEG-2 and MPEG-4/H.264 advanced processing, switching and ad insertion in a highly reliable chassis.

“Our new Modular Video Processor is the heart of RGB Networks’ telecom strategy and will dramatically expand the opportunities for us with large telecom carriers, as it provides them with the capabilities, performance and reliability they need to cost effectively expand their IPTV rollouts,” said Jef Graham, CEO of RGB Networks. “The time and effort that has gone in to developing our truly state-of-the-art MVP is a testament to RGB’s commitment to the telecom industry.”

“As the large telecom carriers further accelerate their IPTV deployments, they increasingly require advanced video processing solutions. RGB's Modular Video Processor, which has been built specifically for telco IPTV services, can be used for digital ad insertion and overlay insertion, which will be important in increasing telcos’ video revenues," said Michelle Abraham, a principal analyst with In-Stat, a leading technology and market research firm.

RGB consulted closely with several large telecom carriers in designing the MVP to ensure that it meets their specific needs today and into the future. These include concurrent support for the MPEG-2 and MPEG-4/H.264 video standards, targeted advertising insertion, high-density aggregation and exceptional reliability.

The MVP’s support for both MPEG-4/H.264 and MPEG-2 is particularly important as many telcos are adopting MPEG-4/H.264 for its bandwidth efficiency compared to MPEG-2 – enabling up to twice the high definition (HD) and standard definition (SD) programming without increasing bandwidth. While many operators have already deployed an MPEG-2 infrastructure, by supporting both standards, telcos with existing MPEG-2 deployments can use the MVP to continue delivering MPEG-2 services as they transition to MPEG-4/H.264.

Advertising insertion is another key application that large carriers are demanding as it is a proven revenue generator that earned U.S. cable operators nearly $4.3 billion in 2006 according to Kagan Research. The MVP utilizes RGB’s proven zoned ad insertion capabilities to give telcos the ability to take advantage of this lucrative revenue generating opportunity.

The MVP also addresses carriers’ need for cost-effective aggregation of content, dramatically lowering the cost of aggregation using RGB’s proven Video Intelligence Architecture™ (VIA) for processing substantially more video programs than competitive products.

Carriers also require very high reliability from the equipment in their networks to ensure uninterrupted service delivery, and as such the MVP has been designed from the outset to meet this need. Exceptional reliability and fault-tolerance are enabled by the MVP’s NEBS-compliant chassis design, which incorporates extensive fail-over capabilities and comprehensive component redundancies to ensure the highest levels of availability.

RGB will continue to develop the MVP, taking advantage of its modular, chassis-based architecture and will provide additional capabilities through the addition of new modules to enable new applications.

RGB will demonstrate the MVP at its booth (#122) at the upcoming TelcoTV tradeshow, October 23-25, in Atlanta.
